Canadian Small Businesses and AI: Start With One Task That Saves Time

Most Canadian SMEs use AI rarely or not at all. One small, measurable first step beats a broad AI plan.

Canadian small and mid sized businesses have a clear message for the AI industry. Show us what it does in daily work. On 2 November 2026, the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) launched two new initiatives, Mission AI and AI Studio. The reason was its own research. According to BDC, 69 percent of Canadian SMEs are AI Novices, meaning businesses that use AI rarely or not at all. Only 30 percent use generative AI, yet the businesses that do are 24 percent more productive, according to a BDC study from June 2026.

That gap is the opportunity. It is also a warning. A business that starts too broadly ends up with one more tool nobody uses. A business that starts with one task that costs time every day can show a visible gain quickly.

Choose the task that costs time first

Mission AI follows exactly that approach. Led by Managing Director Dominic Gagnon, the initiative aims to find common operational challenges and test solutions with entrepreneurs in real businesses. The focus is on tasks that can be automated to free up time, not on AI as a goal in itself.

Ask your team these three questions:

  • Which task repeats every week and costs at least one hour?
  • Which information for that task already exists, such as prices, dates or standard answers?
  • Who checks the result before it reaches a customer?

If you cannot answer those questions, the task is not ready for automation yet. Write it down in five short steps first.

Examples that work in small businesses

Good first tasks are narrow and have a clear result:

  • Sorting incoming requests by topic and sending each one to the right person
  • Preparing standard answers to common questions, with a person approving each one before it is sent
  • Moving appointments and reminders from requests into a calendar
  • Turning notes from a customer conversation into a clean summary

Start with one of these. One finished first step builds trust. Three half finished steps only create more work.

Measure productivity before you expand

The 24 percent figure from BDC is an average, not a promise for your business. Measure your own number before you buy more tools. For the chosen task, record for four weeks:

  • How long it took before
  • How long it takes with the new routine
  • How often the result has to be corrected
  • How often a customer has to ask a follow up question

If time falls and corrections stay stable, the task is ready for the next step. If corrections rise, the task or the data behind it is not clean enough yet. Our workflow automation service starts from that same check.

Canadian tools help, but fit matters more

Mission AI tests Canadian AI solutions with entrepreneurs, so small businesses can choose with more confidence. For your business, one practical point matters more than origin. The tool must respect your data, repeat your prices and details correctly, and fit the systems you already use.

Before buying, check:

  • Where your customer data is stored and processed
  • Whether you can stop the tool at any time and export your data
  • Who provides support in your time zone

A tool that cannot answer those three questions clearly is not ready for a small business yet, wherever it was built.

A 30 day plan

Use this order:

  1. Choose one task and one owner.
  2. Write the routine in five steps.
  3. Test the tool beside the old routine for two weeks.
  4. Compare time and corrections, then decide.
  5. Only then choose the next task.

After 30 days you will not have an AI plan on paper. You will have a number you can show your team. That is the difference between a trial and a result.

The takeaway

Most Canadian SMEs are still at the start of AI use. That is not a disadvantage if the first step is small and measurable. Choose one task that costs time, test it beside the old routine, and expand only what proves itself.
