How long SEO actually takes to work

SEO's timescale is the thing most often misrepresented in the sale. Knowing the real curve prevents both impatience and being sold something impossible.

The realistic curve

• Weeks 1–4. Technical fixes get indexed. If something was badly broken — a noindex, a blocked robots file, no sitemap — you can see movement quickly. This is repair, not growth.
• Months 2–4. New pages start ranking for long, specific queries. Low volume, high intent. First enquiries attributable to search usually appear here.
• Months 4–8. Established pages climb for their main terms as they accumulate signals.
• Months 8–18. Competitive head terms, if they come at all.

What moves fastest

1. Fixing something broken. Days to weeks, and occasionally dramatic.
2. Pages that do not exist yet for terms with little competition. Weeks to months.
3. Improving pages already ranking 5th–15th. The best return in SEO and consistently overlooked. Weeks.
4. Google Business Profile for local queries. Sometimes days.

What is slow, always

Competing for a broad commercial term against sites with a decade of links. That is a multi-year project, and for most small businesses it is not the right use of the budget.

Why a new domain is slower

A brand new site has no history. Expect three to six months before anything meaningful happens, regardless of quality. This is not a penalty — there is simply no evidence yet.

What to watch in the meantime

Impressions in Search Console move before clicks do. If impressions are climbing and clicks are not, the pages are being found and the titles are not persuading — a fixable problem, and a good early signal that the work is landing.

The warning sign

Anyone guaranteeing a position. Nobody controls the ranking, and the tactics that produce fast movement on competitive terms are usually the ones that produce a manual action six months later.
