Local SEO for a service business, without an agency
Five things that move local rankings, in order. Most of them are free and take an afternoon.
Local search is one of the few areas where a small business can outrank a large one, because the ranking factors are largely administrative rather than expensive.
1. Google Business Profile, properly filled in
This is the single biggest lever and most profiles are half complete. Correct category — the primary one matters a great deal. Full service list. Real opening hours including holidays. Ten or more genuine photographs. Products or services with prices. Answer the Q&A yourself. A complete profile routinely outranks a more established competitor with a sparse one.
2. Consistent name, address and phone number
The same string everywhere: your site, the profile, directories, your Impressum, social profiles. "Str." in one place and "Straße" in another is a small inconsistency that dilutes a signal you get for free.
3. Reviews, asked for systematically
Volume, recency and responses all matter. Ask every satisfied customer, by name, with a direct link, within a week of finishing. Reply to every review including the bad ones — future customers read the reply more carefully than the complaint. Never buy reviews; in Germany that is actionable as unfair competition, not merely against platform rules.
4. A page per service and per location
If you serve three cities, you need three pages with genuinely different content — not the same text with the city swapped, which is thin content and gets treated as such. Local projects, local references, local specifics.
5. Local links
The chamber of commerce, the trade association, the local sponsorship, the supplier who lists partners, the regional press. These are worth more for local search than any number of general directory listings.
What to measure
Not rankings — those vary by the searcher's exact location. Measure profile views, direction requests, calls from the profile, and enquiries that mention finding you on Google. Those are in Business Profile's own reporting and they reflect reality.
The unglamorous truth
Local SEO is mostly filling things in completely and asking for reviews consistently. It is boring, it is free, and it beats most paid alternatives at this scale.
