WordPress

Does a business blog still work in 2026?

AI answers took the easy traffic. What remains is narrower, harder and considerably more valuable.

The honest position: publishing generic articles to catch informational searches no longer works well. AI summaries answer those questions directly and the click never happens. That does not mean writing is dead — it means the cheap version of it is.

What stopped working

"What is content marketing." "Top 10 tips for X." Anything a model can answer from general knowledge. If your article contains nothing that could not be written by someone who has never done the work, it will not earn a click.

What still works

  • Specific numbers from your own work. What a website actually cost, with the line items. What the migration broke. How long it really took. Nobody can synthesise your invoices.
  • Local and regulatory specificity. How VAT works for a small German business selling digital goods to Canada. This changes, it is jurisdiction-bound, and getting it wrong is expensive — so people read carefully and click through.
  • Comparisons with a position. Not "here are the features of both". "Here is when we choose each, and here is the one we regret choosing."
  • Writing that makes a sale easier. The article you send a prospect who asks a reasonable question. Its value is not traffic; it is the deal it shortens.

The realistic measure

Stop counting page views. Count: enquiries that mention an article, sales cycles shortened because a question was already answered, and rankings for the three or four terms that describe what you sell. Twelve articles that do that beat two hundred that do not.

Cadence

Frequency is not the lever people think it is. One genuinely useful piece a month, kept updated, beats three thin ones a week — and publishing large volumes of near-identical AI-written pages is explicitly what Google's spam policies call scaled content abuse. That risk is real and it is site-wide, not page-by-page.

The unglamorous advantage

A blog is the only place you own where you can answer a question at length, in your own words, without an algorithm deciding who sees it. That was always the actual value. It just used to come with free traffic attached.
