What actually works on LinkedIn in the German market

German B2B audiences respond to different things than North American ones. What changes, and what does not.

Advice about LinkedIn is overwhelmingly written for a North American audience. Some of it transfers and some of it actively backfires in Germany.

What is different

  • Overt self-promotion lands badly. The confident personal-success post that performs in the US reads as boastful in a German feed. Understatement is not modesty here; it is credibility.
  • Specificity is rewarded. Technical detail, real numbers, methodology. An audience that is on average more sceptical of claims responds to evidence.
  • Formality is a spectrum, not a rule. Most B2B German LinkedIn now uses "du" in posts and "Sie" in first messages. When unsure, "Sie" costs nothing.
  • Language matters. If your buyers are German, post in German. English posts reach a wider but far less relevant audience, and a German buyer reading English content quietly assumes you are not local.

What is the same

Personal accounts outperform company pages heavily. Text and native documents outperform links. The first two lines decide whether anything is read. Commenting thoughtfully on other people's posts is still the most underrated growth activity on the platform.

Formats that work

  1. A specific problem and how you solved it. With the numbers, including what went wrong.
  2. An opinion with reasoning. Not a hot take — a considered position someone could disagree with productively.
  3. A short document (carousel). Still reaches well and suits explanatory material.
  4. Answering a question you were genuinely asked. Reliably the best-performing thing most B2B accounts post.

XING

Frequently asked and the honest answer is that it has declined significantly as a content platform in the German-speaking market. Keep a complete profile for search; put your effort into LinkedIn.

The compliance footnote

If you run a company page or advertise, remember that a business account is a public communication: the Impressum obligation applies to social profiles too, and a link to your site's Impressum in the profile satisfies it. It is the sort of detail that produces a warning letter precisely because everyone forgets it.
