Elementor versus a custom theme: the five-year cost
Page builders are cheaper to start and more expensive to keep. Where exactly the crossover happens.
This argument is usually had on aesthetics and should be had on economics. Both approaches produce good sites. They cost money at different times.
Year one
A builder wins clearly. A competent Elementor site costs perhaps half a custom theme, and the client can rearrange sections themselves on day one. For a business that needs a decent site next month, this is a real advantage and it is dishonest to pretend otherwise.
Years two and three
The gap narrows. The builder site accumulates page-level styling — a margin here, a font size there — because it is possible. After two years the site is technically consistent nowhere and every new page is a slightly different shape. Performance work is also harder: much of the CSS and JS is the builder's, and you cannot remove it.
Years four and five
The custom theme is usually ahead. It has fewer moving parts, no builder licence, no major-version migrations, and it can be restyled by changing a handful of tokens. The builder site is often facing a rebuild, because the fastest route to a fresh design is to start again.
How to choose honestly
- Builder if the marketing team publishes new landing pages weekly, the budget is tight now, or the site's life expectancy is two years.
- Custom theme if the design must stay consistent, performance is a business concern, or the site is expected to last five years or more.
The middle path most people miss
A custom theme with properly configured Gutenberg blocks. Editors get the layout freedom they actually use — which is far less than a builder offers — inside a system that stays consistent. It costs a little more than a builder build and considerably less than fighting one for five years. For most businesses this is now the right answer, and it is available in core WordPress at no licence cost.
The question that settles it
Who will edit this site, and what will they need to change? If the answer is "text and images, occasionally", a builder is expensive freedom. If the answer is "a new campaign page every fortnight", it is money well spent.
